“The founders established the Foundation with the aim of supporting research in archaeology, linguistics and history according to the highest academic standards, along with the publication of the results under the current difficult economic circumstances.”

Our Mission

Archaeolingua is a Budapest-based, public interest organization, a foundation, publishing house and research centre, which has operated since 1991. Archaeolingua is dedicated to putting forward works of high-quality scholarship in the fields of archaeology, history, historical linguistics and related academic fields, with a special emphasis on interdisciplinary research. Other aims include supporting the protection of cultural heritage and monuments, disseminating knowledge on cultural and natural heritage, supporting the creation and preservation of works of art, as well as education on heritage protection and awareness.

The publishing house has two main book series (Main Series or ‘Series Maior’ and ‘Series Minor’), implemented through co-operation with national and international institutions (e.g. the Europae Archaeologiae Consilium; Central European University, Budapest/Vienna; the Institute of Archaeology at the Research Centre for the Humanities, Budapest). Other series of Archaeolingua include the ‘Central European Heritage Series’ made in collaboration with Archaeopress Oxford, the ‘Hereditas Archeologicae Hungariae Series’ published jointly with the Research Centre for the Humanities, and special thematic publications with Pázmány Péter Catholic University and the Department of Egyptology at Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest. Archaeolingua also issues an online, bilingual (Hungarian and English) journal Hungarian Archaeology, addressing diverse topics of archaeology, cultural heritage and international research projects.

Archaeolingua was founded in 1991 by the late Sándor Bökönyi (ex-director of the Institute of Archaeology of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences), Wolfgang Meid (professor emeritus at the Department of Linguistics of the University of Innsbruck), and the “IT Applications in Archaeology” Research Team of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Throughout its history, the Foundation has cooperated with a number of universities and research institutions, including the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Europae Archaeologiae Consilium, the Department of Linguistics of the University of Innsbruck, the ICOMOS, the Department of Medieval Studies at Central European University, the EPOCH – European Network of Excellence on ICT Applications to Cultural Heritage, the CAA – Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology, the Department of Prehistory and Archaeology of the University of Miskolc, the British Archaeological Reports, the Matrica Museum and Archaeological Park of Százhalombatta, the Aquincum Museum, the Universalmuseum Joanneum (Graz), or the Hungarian National Museum, just to name a few.

Archaeolingua was, and is, part of various international research projects. More recently, we have contributed to the Interreg Iron-Age-Danube Project, funded by the European Council, which focused on monumental archaeological landscapes of the Early IronAge (9th–4th century BC / Hallstatt period), characterized by, e.g., fortified hilltop settlements and large tumulus cemeteries.
